This past November I participated in National Novel Writing Month, which if you haven’t heard of it is where people write a 50,000 word novel in a month. My work was nonfiction, but that didn’t matter. What was important was that this was the first time in a few years that I’ve been able to participate and that I actually got those 50,000 words written.

That experience got me to thinking: can you NaNoWriMo all year long?

Sure! There’s no reason why you can’t keep up the pace of roughly 1700 words a day throughout the year. Okay, there are a lot of reasons, but if you make time for writing, you certainly can keep up that same pace year round. I haven’t been doing quite as good as NaNoWriMo. I kind of took December off. But I am keeping up my writing and building habits that will serve me well come next November.

There are many ways you can keep up the writing and even “gamify” it to make it easier. With sidebar modules, different programs, or even your own system, you can keep track of your word count and keep writing.

So the short answer is, YES! Of course you can NaNoWriMo year around. Your writing career will thank you for it, too.
