You don’t have to search for “social media management tools” to know there are a ton of them out there. Hootsuite, Planable, MyEdgar…there are so many and each one promises to make your social media quicker, better, more powerful. And each tool says its better than the last. Forget about them (for now).

There’s one thing you need to manage your social media and ensure you’re promoting what you want, when you want. You know what that is? A plan.

Again, when it comes to editorial calendars, social media calendars, everyone has a tool and everyone will tell you why theirs is the best. You don’t need some fancy program. While my preference is for an excel spreadsheet (I’m managing a lot of social media), a simple piece of paper with seven columns and a row for each social media network is fine. As long as you have a plan, you have a head start.

The simple plan allows you to keep track of what you want to promote (a new release? a first in series?) and allows you to align your posts with that. In this way, you’ll be covering the bases, even while you share, retweet, and chat away.
